Feb 23, 2024 · “Forever Wild” — Remember those words as we explore the maverick that is Baxter State Park in The Maine Highlands. The formidable landscape includes the tallest peak in Maine — Mt. Katahdin (“k’taa-din”) — and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail across 200,000 acres of pristine wilderness.
The Traveler Loop summits three peaks, Peak of the Ridges, The Traveler and North Traveler Mountain and the hike requires a total elevation gain of 3,700 feet, only 400 feet less than required of a Katahdin hike on the Hunt Trail.
Baxter State Park is a large wilderness area permanently preserved as a state park in Northeast Piscataquis, Piscataquis County in north-central Maine, United States. It is in the North Maine Woods region and borders the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument on the east.
The park is open for day use from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm. You must check-in at the gate no later than 8:30PM on your first night of camping. Campsite check in time: 1:00 pm on arrival day, except 2:00 pm for cabins. Check out time: 11:00 am on departure day. Quiet hours in the park are 9 pm – 7 am.
