Being Ridden appeared in 2003 (in both a regular and instrumental version) before Cex made his Jade Tree debut in the fall of that same year with Maryland Mansions. The Know Doubt EP followed in 2005 and the charmingly titled Actual Fucking was issued by Automation Records a year later.

That’s a question one has to grapple with when it comes to Being Ridden. I love this album; it’s the synthesis of everything Cex had done to that point into an absolutely idiosyncratic sound that -for better or worse- makes him the ancient astronaut forefather of all the ‘emo-rap’ to come later.

You won't sell jeans with CEX from the speakers; you'll take 'em off. On 'Being Ridden' the rough edges have been smoothed out a bit ; What remains is dry digital funk with all-American teen hysteria. Tthough not shy of experiment, CEX sticks to a storyline and even when using odd soundscapes, the cinematic appeal of 'Being Ridden' stands out.
