Dinosaur Park is home to giant concrete statues of dinosaurs and is located high up on a ridge overlooking the Black Hills.

    • Explore Sylvan Lake. One of the most picturesque spots in this region is Sylvan Lake, a must-see when visiting the Black Hills. Situated at the north end end of Custer State Park, the lake is a perfect place for kids to explore by climbing, paddling, or swimming.
    • Drive Through Tiny Tunnels on the Needles Highway. Starting at Sylvan Lake, take the Needles Highway south through Custer State Park. Along the way you will pass through a tunnel with a unique rock formation called the Needle’s Eye, named for the slit opening that has been created by years of erosion, wind, rain, and constant freezing and thawing.
    • Get Up Close to Mount Rushmore. The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is an incredibly impressive feat of engineering that every kid should see in their lifetime.
    • Pet Wild Burros in Custer State Park. Custer State Park is home to the famous “begging burros” , donkeys that were once used to take travelers up to Black Elk Peak from Sylvan Lake.
    • Mount Rushmore National Monument (Keystone) The most iconic sight in the Black Hills is Mt Rushmore National Memorial. This enormous sculpture of four former presidents carved into the mountain offers stunning views and amazing photo opportunities.
    • Keystone Historical Museum (Keystone) The Keystone Historical Museum, located in the town school from 1899, is a great stop for families visiting the Black Hills.

    • National Presidential Wax Museum (Keystone) The National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone is a great place for kids (and adults) to learn about the history of the United States.
    • Mount Rushmore. The crown jewel of attractions in all of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore gives you a chance to get up close and personal with some of the greatest presidents in US history.
    • Custer State Park Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour (and Wildlife Loop) The Custer buffalo safari tour takes you off-road through the park in an open-air jeep to see pronghorns, elk, and buffalo with a guide who shares historical and educational facts about the park and wildlife.
    • Sylvan Lake. Sylvan Lake is a beautiful lake along Needles Highway in the Black Hills. It’s best to visit in the summer as the water stays cold for a long time, but lots of people have fun canoeing, swimming, and wading in the lake as well as hiking the nearby areas, including Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak).
    • Rush Mountain Adventure Park. We’ve never visited this adventure park before but plan to on our next trip! Some of the family-friendly activities you can take part in are a tour of Rushmore Cave, and riding the Rushmore Mountain Coaster, the Soaring Eagle Zipride, and the Gunslinger 7-D Ride.
    • The Journey Museum & Learning Center. Begin your journey around the Black Hills at the phenomenal Journey Museum which explores the history and culture of the Black Hills, from prehistoric times to recent history.
    • Prairie Edge Trading Co. is a Sioux Trading Post in the heart of downtown. It feels more like a gallery and museum than some of the other trading posts I have visited in the past.
    • Art Alley. If you have teens or tweens who are Instragram obsessed, you will definitely want to head to Art Alley. There are several ever-changing murals in this colorful alley and they serve as great backdrops for photos!
    • City of Presidents. Rapid City is known as the “City of Presidents” for a couple reasons. First, it serves as the gateway city for Mount Rushmore. But second, it is also home to life-sized bronze statues of every past president of the United States.

The 14-mile highway leads through forests, meadows, rugged granite mountains, and some of the Black Hills tourist attractions. Sylvan Lake and the Needle’s Eye rock formation are the real draws here.
