The patch basically turns the English ROM into a translated Japanese ROM (pretty much the same result as the JP patch). The XDelta patch is basically like a fancy "diff" file, when patched it changes the "Original file" into the "Modified file" by applying those changes at the binary level for every byte.

Feb 13, 2024 · TL;DR: There's a new patch for DQ4 DS that adds the mobile version's party chat dialogue to the English ROM, which avoids issues that arise from patching the English script into the Japanese ROM. GitHub page of the new patch.
The limit seems to be around 23 characters if the text is indented and 25 (23 + 2) if the text is not indented. I am not sure if every character is monospaced: it seems to be not monospaced when I look at my example screenshot. If this is the case then the character limit varys.

Changes in the DS version
1. A sixth chapter was added. 2. An Immigrant Town was added, similar to The Haven in Dragon Quest VII. 3. The Boomerang was replaced by the Hunter's bow. 4. Instead of the liquid metal shield, the casino sells Falcon blades. 5. After completing the game, a side-quest becomes available which makes Psaroable to join the party. 6. A new dungeonwas added in Chapter 6, along with a new Return Point. Completing this dungeon a certain number of times grants access to get Psaro's equipment.

Dragon Quest IV was remade for the PlayStation on November 22, 2001 in Japan. It was developed by Heartbeat and published by Enix.
