Dan O'Shannon is an American writer who briefly worked on The Orville for Season 3 in 2019 as a co-executive producer. O'Shannon has been highly self-critical of his time with the show: disappointed with his lack of creative input in the script-writing process.
Dan O'Shannon already knew creator Seth MacFarlane and executive producer Brannon Braga from "back in the day," who then invited him to join the writing staff as a co-executive producer. He believed The Orville would be his final television writing project.
O'Shannon began work for The Orville in early 2019 for Season 3. Unlike a majority of the writers, O'Shannon had little experience with science fiction, having mostly written for shows like Cheers and Modern Family. "I'm used to writing real people in living rooms and local establishments," O'Shannon said in a July 2, 2019 interview on WKYC while writing was underway.
Unfortunately, O'Shannon grew disappointed with a lack of involvement in script writing, probably because he felt uncomfortable writing science fiction. Just six days after his WKYC interview, O'Shannon stated he had left the show. "I really didn't do anything at all," he later said.
By August, O'Shannon's attitude toward the show he had left nosedived. In one interview, the hosts asked him to plug The Orville. "Yeah, watch The Orville - or don't," he said. "I'm not going to be on TV. It's not going to affect my career at all."
