If Elysium weren't a follow up to District 9, critics and audiences alike would have gone a lot easier on Blomkamp. Elysium was a genuinely decent film with a few outstanding set pieces; and was way better than half the mediocre actioners studios churn out every year.
The movie follows a classic post-apocalyptic narrative, but makes it more personal. Lead by Matt Damon (Who’s in one of his best roles in this), this movie takes an excellently paced ride through the horrors of technology and poverty.
The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium - but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens' luxurious lifestyle.

Aug 9, 2013 · “Elysium” is involving enough that it’s tempting to forgive its numerous logical flaws, but much of what happens doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Let’s start with the medical pods. The film is vague about how numerous they are, and their healing powers barely stop short of resurrection.
