    • Algiers Ferry. Since 1827 the Algiers Ferry has been a city-run means of public transportation. The Louisiana Legislature awarded August Coycault and Barthelemy Gosselin a contract to operate a steam ferry from the foot of Patterson Street on the west bank to Jackson Square on the east bank.
