An eruption at the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge, comprising the southern half of the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, took place between 19 September and 13 December 2021. [7] It was the first volcanic eruption on the island since the eruption of Teneguía in 1971. [8]
La Palma is a volcanic ocean island located on the African Plate and is currently—along with Tenerife—one of the most volcanically active of the Canary Islands. Since about 125,000 years ago (~125 ka ), all subaerial eruptions on La Palma have been associated with the Cumbre Vieja, with eruptions ranging over the whole 25-kilometre-long ridge.
La Palma's geography is a result of the volcanic formation of the island. The highest peaks reach over 2,400 m (7,874 ft) above sea level, and the base of the island is located almost 4,000 m (13,123 ft) below sea level.

In this study, the ionospheric scintillation produced by the 2021 La Palma volcano eruption is analyzed. The Cumbre Vieja volcano was active from 19 September to 13 December 2021, and many earthquakes of magnitude 3–4 were recorded, with some of them reaching magnitude 5.
