1949-1950 Toleteros. THE PLAYER. Hilton Lee Smith (February 27, 1907 - November 18, 1983) played most of his career behind fellow Hall of Famer Satchel Paige, often finishing games that Paige started and posting a legendary career of his home on the mound.

Hilton Smith. The true Rookie Card for Hilton Smith was included within the 1948-49 Toleteros Puerto Rican Winter League issue. Subsequently, another card depicting Smith hails from the following season's Toleteros set produced during the 1949-50 Winter League season.
A well preserved card set overall and rare to find this complete and w/the Hilton Smith rarity. This is the third and final 1948-49 album in the Merkin collection, the two previous examples (both w/less cards but both w/the Hilton Smith card) sold for $4,830 and $6,325.
The true highlight of this set, and included in the album, is Hilton Smith (see related all-star game button item #789). This card alone is listed in the 2011 Standard Catalog Of Baseball Cards with values of $20,000 NM, $10,000 EX, $6,000 VG.
1948-49 Toleteros Hilton Smith Card First year Toleteros card is the best of the set. Sepia image of Hall of Famer Hilton Smith on the front and "Toleteros 51 Strike Rompe Plato" on the back. Front has some staining and minor creases but corners are still fairly sharp.
