Look at the scenes in Catching Fire when Katniss wants to run. Gale is on fire to go until he knows that Peeta's going, and then gets riled up over the news about 8. He wants rebellion and revolution and is quick to war. And it's understandable, especially after the bombing of 12.
Nailed it. The Hunger games series as a whole isn't about a girl and her love triangle. It's about living in the realities of a revolution, a war, and the costs of it. That no one is safe. Even the innocent die and people get used and hurt and anyone can be broken and destroyed.
It showed that even though Katniss and Peeta made it through the hunger games and the war, there is no truly "happy" ending for either of them. Something I've always wondered is if they would've ended up together if not for the rebellion.
