It is the first spin-off film and the overall ninth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, set after the events of The Fate of the Furious (2017).

A sequel was confirmed in 2020 by Dwayne Johnson however as of 2023 the film has been put on-hold indefinitely. A standalone Hobbs film is currently in-development and is set to reintroduce Luke Hobbs back into the franchise as he is targeted by Dante Reyes .
