Relatively recently discovered, in comparison to the ancient church, this location was discovered by a British General in 1842. But it was first spotted by Greek landowners looking for water.
It seems that the Garden Tomb cave was emptied of its original contents at that time and prepared for use as a Christian burial site—perhaps for the clergy of St. Stephen’s church.
According to the gospel accounts, the tomb originally belonged to Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man who, believing Jesus was the Messiah, offered his own sepulcher for the burial of Jesus. Possible locations for the tomb of Jesus include the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Garden Tomb.
None of the features at the Garden Tomb, either inside the burial cave or outside it, can be connected archaeologically with the events of Jesus’ burial and Resurrection as recorded in the New Testament.
