Star Wars games have varied pretty widely in quality over the years and from platform to platform. TIE Fighter for the PC about a decade ago was a truly quality title, and relatively credible attempts have been made more recently to send gamers to the galaxy far, far away, like Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars Galaxies. The mystique of exploring the familiar yet exciting Star Wars universe in game will always be compelling, and an opportunity now exists for fans of the Plug-and-Play TVGames from Jakks Pacific thanks to the Star Wars Original Trilogy game unit.
The play unit is similar to Jakks' other self-contained products. The mini-console is powered by four AA batteries and connects to TVs via RCA composite wires with mono-sound. A joystick, two action buttons, an on-off switch, and menu button allow for play and navigation. The coolest part of the whole issue is the fact that the entire controller is a relatively detailed Millennium Falcon. We also like the fact that this unit is able to save high scores and some accomplishments on internal memory. A big complaint, however, is the fact that the housing places the action buttons on the left and the stick on the right, completely opposite the longstanding standard in videogames. While casual players will likely not notice, gamers will notice the odd layout immediately.
The Original Trilogy unit contains four games, which are, sadly, not the originals from past consoles but brand new action titles.
