James, who coached the Huskies from 1975 to 1992, is often regarded as one of the greatest coaches in Husky history. He compiled a record of 150-60-2 in his 17 years on Montlake, including a 97-38-2 record in Pac-10 play. (James’ overall record is 175-79-3, counting the four years he spent at Kent State before coming to the UW.)
Newell, a senior at South Kitsap, earned the distinction of becoming the first recruit of Neuheisel's 2000 class Thursday when he gave the Huskies a verbal commitment. Some might say the first week of August is a mite early to enter into such an agreement. Newell says there was never a choice.
James' record with the Huskies was 153–57–2. James won national coach of the year honors in 1977, 1984 and 1991 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997. Sports columnists and football experts have recognized the 1991 Washington Huskies among the top 10 college football teams of all time.
