John Howard Payne (May 23, 1912 – December 6, 1989) was an American film actor who is mainly remembered from film noir crime stories and 20th Century Fox musical films, and for his leading roles in Miracle on 34th Street and the NBC Western television series The Restless Gun.

A very serious 1961 accident, however, in which John was hit by a car in New York City, slowed him down considerably. It took well over two years for him to recover enough from his leg fractures and facial/scalp wounds to return to acting.

On the show, his career feels considerable guilt over a long-ago car crash that derailed his career and that of his co-star (played by Janet Leigh). In real life, Payne had been struck by a car in New York City in 1961.
