Biography John Stocker, "some time of Honiton, Devonshire, [England,] contributed, during 1776 and 1777, nine hymns to the Gospel Magazine. These hymns were collected and reprinted, in 1861, by D. Sedgwick" (Julian 1907).
He was born at Honiton, Devonshire, England. He is considered a friend of A. M. Toplady (who wrote “Rock of Ages”) who lived for a while near to Honiton. John Stocker contributed nine hymns to “The Gospel Magazine” in 1776-1777.
Sep 23, 2020 · John Stocker wrote a hymn, “Thy Mercy My God, Is The Theme Of My Song,” in 1776 that I discovered on the pages of a Gadsby’s Hymnal about ten years ago.
Stocker, John Author (not in Praise! index). A resident for at least some time of Honiton, Devon, he contributed 9 hymn texts to the Gospel Magazine in 1776–77. In 1861 he was identified by the hymnologist Daniel Sedgwick (a friend of C H Spurgeon) as the ‘J.S.’ who wrote no.273.
