The island is mainly of volcanic origin. Its mountainous interior rises to 5,886 ft (1,794 m) with Mount Kuju, the highest of its 23 peaks. The world’s largest active volcano, Mount Aso (5,885 ft; 1,591 m), is on Kyūshū. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous hot springs.
