Ken Rex McElroy (June 1, 1934 – July 10, 1981) was an American criminal and convicted attempted murderer who resided in Skidmore, Missouri, United States. He was known as "the town bully", [1] and his unsolved killing became the focus of international attention.

Rowan was based upon the real life northwest Missouri resident Ken McElroy, who was murdered by residents of Skidmore, Missouri after a one man reign of terror. In the early 1980s Rowan engaged in a variety of criminal acts, including theft, cattle rustling, rape, and attempted murder.
