A wealthy bachelor, Bill lives in a large apartment in Manhattan's Upper East Side, and has a British manservant, Giles French (usually called "Mr. French" or just "French"), as his valet.
Family Affair is a TV series about a bachelor engineer and his valet who become surrogate parents for three orphaned children. The show features Brian Keith, Sebastian Cabot, Kathy Garver, Anissa Jones and Johnny Whitaker, and the famous Mrs. Beasley doll.

He is best remembered as the gentleman's gentleman, Giles French in the CBS-TV sitcom Family Affair (1966–1971). He was also known for playing the Wazir in the film Kismet (1955) and Dr. Carl Hyatt in the CBS-TV series Checkmate (1960–1962).
Mr French meets an old friend, Lorna, who is the nanny for a Duke and Duchess, and considers returning to England with them. This is a comedy family episode of Family Affair, a TV series about a bachelor uncle and his nieces and nephews.

Aug 16, 2017 · A kinder, gentler Mr. Belvedere, Mr. French did all the duties of a traditional TV mom. He kept Uncle Bill’s swanky 5th Avenue apartment perfectly clean, despite three nearly feral kids. Okay, that was his job, but it also seemed to be his life.
