     This is the perfect example of what you'd use a join for. See the example below on how to use the join syntax. The query below will yield the same result as your query but is a more conventional syntax. The advantages is that you can separate your joining logic and your filtering (WHERE clause) logic. If you needed to filter the results of the join, it would be a simple WHERE clause, rather than having both your join logic and filtering logic in the WHERE clause.

     SELECT employees.emp_no, employees.first_name, employees.last_name, dept_emp.from_date, dept_emp.to_date, departments.dept_name FROM employees eINNER JOIN dept_emp de ON e.emp_no = de.emp_noINNER JOIN departments d ON de.dept_no = d.dept_no-

     We start off by selecting from the employees table, joining to the dept_emp table. The on clause specifies fields need to match to join the two tables. Same with dept_emp to departments.

     EDIT: In response to the other part of your question:

     I got the result but if an employer has more depts the table gives me more row for the same employer.

     I want to know if this is normal or if is there any other way to query that. I saw some examples with join but i don't know how to use it with three tables. This is all new for me.

     Yes this is normal, if there are multiple departments per employee, each department will be a row with the same emp_no.

     Your guess about the form is correct. There is a "NEW ACCOUNT FORM" that asks you a username, email and password. Probably earlier in that php code you should have something like this:

     $username = $_POST['username';$email = $_POST['email'];-

     This is, retrieve the values from the $_POST array that contains the values submitted in the "NEW ACCOUNT FORM". As for the insert part,

     if ($insert_stmt = $mysqli->prepare("INSERT INTO members (username, email, password, salt) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?)"))

     This if condition is true if a valid value is assigned to $insert_stmt, I guess that it would be null if the conection to the database hasn't been established or something like that.

     $insert_smtp would have now something as a "template" of the insert query, it is missing the parameters. The "?" symbols, stands for a parameter you would be sending later.

     The instruction

     $insert_stmt->bind_param('ssss', $username, $email, $password, $random_salt);

     will bind the parameters marked "?" in the "template".

     The reason for not to putting directly the username , email, password in the INSERT statment is that, they could include SQL statements that may result in an SQL injection attack. By passing the parameters via "bind_param" the function takes care of cleaning the variables before putting them in the insert.

     The instruction

     $insert_stmt->execute();

     Finally executes the query on the database.

     'information_schema' should be holding the relevant details. You can try

     SELECT table_type, table_nameFROM information_schema.tablesWHERE table_rows >= 1;-

     to select from a selective database. You can also filter by TABLE_SCHEMA:

     SELECT table_schema, table_type, table_name FROM information_schema.tablesWHERE table_rows >= 1 AND TABLE_SCHEMA=?

     I have seen both approaches at my current company and would definitely lean towards the first (calculating totals based on stock transactions).

     If you are only storing a total quantity in a field somewhere, you have no idea how you arrived at that number. There is no transactional history and you can end up with problems.

     The last system I wrote tracks stock by storing each transaction as a record with a positive or negative quantity. I have found it works very well.

     It depends, inventory systems are about far more than just counting items. For example, for accounting purposes, you might need to know accounting value of inventory based on FIFO (First-in-First-out) model. That can't be calculated by simple "totaling inventory received - total of inventory sold" formula. But their model might calculate this easily, because they modify accounting value as they go. I don't want to go into details because this is not programming issue but if they swear by it, maybe you didn't understand fully all their requirements they have to accommodate.

     Sounds like you need a status on the inventory table. For example, a record for an arbitrary tool can have a status field that is a foreign key in the "Statuses" table. The Statuses table could look like this:

     ID Description-----------------------1 Available2 In Use3 Broken

     ... etc.

     Your Inventory table could look like this:

     id status_id description-------------------------------------1 2 Hammer2 1 Hammer3 3 Hammer4 1 Saw5 3 Saw

     Then, when you calculate inventory, only show records where a tool has a status of "1" for Available. You could also run queries for management to show how many tools are "Broken". Plan for eventually deleting these records once the broken tools are accounted for properly, or, keep them for historical data purposes.

     At all costs, avoid creating separate tables for the disposition of any entity in the database. Use a "flag" field (i.e. status_id), so you can add new statuses to an application without needed to infinitely add new tables.
