  2. Native to New Zealand, this evergreen perennial forms clumps of sword-like leaves that are a striking combination of burgundy, green, and pinkish-red hues. The bold and colorful foliage of Maori Queen adds a touch of drama and flair to garden landscapes. With a clumping growth habit, it's well-suited for both garden beds and container plantings.

  4. Story: Flax and flax working. In the late 1700s Māori showed European visitors how New Zealand flax could be prepared to make rope and other useful items. This led to a booming trade in flax fibre, and a local flax-stripping industry. Today, research is finding new uses for flax – from face-creams and animal feed to flower arrangements.

  5. Phormium 'Maori Queen' ('Rainbow Queen') is a stunning variety of New Zealand Flax that is prized for its striking foliage. This plant is a clump-forming perennial that grows up to 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for filling large spaces or creating a dramatic focal point in the garden.

  6. Nov 25, 2019 · This is a grass like, shrub plant that is very fibrous. The leaves are long (between 1 and 2 1/2 meters) and thin (5 – 12 cm). This plant grows in a variety of ways. Sometimes the leaves are very erect and stiff, yet other times they can be quite flimsy and drooping. Flax is endemic to New Zealand, meaning that it grows nowhere else in the world.
