  3. Jul 30, 2018 · Bullseye shooters would also use a rim thickness gauge to sort all of their ammunition before a match and cull out the cartridges that were considerably outside the average. A sliding gauge made by Neil Jones was popular back in the day but I haven't seen one in years.

  4. Apr 1, 2022 · There was a full-length article about measuring rim thickness of .22 LR ammo in an old GUN DIGEST (fifteen or so years ago) using a Neil Jones gauge. I don't remember the details, but it seemed like there was some benefit with the cheap ammo, little or no benefit with good ammo.

Here's the bottom line - Back when you could buy a Neil Jones rim thickness gauge for about $30, you could use it to sort through cheaper bulk ammunition and eliminate some of the inconsistent rounds.
