Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the creative minds behind Cobra Kai, conceptualized and developed Obliterated as part of their overall agreement with Sony Pictures Television. Their intention was to both write and serve as executive producers for the series. Initially, in October 2019, TBS granted a direct-to-series order for ten episodes. However, the show underwent changes and was eventually shifted from TBS to Netflix, resulting in a reduction to eight episodes.
Filming started in July 2022 in Las Vegas and Albuquerque.
