Dillon Sisson has always had a thing for the macabre. He went to his first haunted house at the age of 5. His family’s Torrance home was so done up every October it attracted hundreds of kids on Halloween night. And he has the word “Saw” emblazoned in ink on his biceps in honor of the gruesome 2004 horror movie. So it comes as no surprise that when...

My family and I have always been obsessed with Halloween. We did Halloween mazes from scratch from our front yard to our back yard, from when I was about 7 to when I was 17. We got kind of known for it. When we stopped doing that, I was like, well, I guess I should apply here. This was like moving up to the big leagues.

My favorite thing is probably sliding (when characters run and slide on their knees toward unsuspecting victims). That’s always fun. I would also consider myself one of the only people who likes to sprint-chase after people.

Oh no! We scare guys all the time. Last night, I scared some guy who was like 6-feet, 5-inches tall. Everybody has their own way to get afraid.

Pretend like you don’t see them and then snap to them really quick. It just catches people off guard.

There’s actually so many to count; I just go by what happened last week. Last week was a really good one, where I scared this woman so badly, she fell to the floor. That happens a lot. But what happened with this one was that she was crawling back, as if I was actually going to kill her and begging for her life. At that point, I just stopped moving...

Another one last week: I jumped-scared a group of girls and they fell into a planter. I didn’t expect that to happen.

It feels like I either did a bad job or they’re just not scare-able. And in that case, if I can’t scare someone, I’ll try to entertain them.

I do approach them differently. So, we have metal hands and knee pads, and I’ll drop down really low like a squat and smack my knee pads — it’s just like a really kind way to jump scare instead of trying to get in their face. I’ve been coming here since I was 5, and when people would scare me, it didn’t ruin the experience; it made me more intrigue...

I was terrified. But my first year was cool. I’m a bigger person, so they let me use a chainsaw in the maze.
