The Patrick S. Gilmore Award, named for the American bandleader of the Civil War, it is presented annually to the runner-up to the Sousa Award. We are proud of all of our past winners of the Patrick S. Gilmore Award!
This beautiful award honors outstanding high school band students and their achievements and commitment to the band. It may be used as a runner-up award to the John Philip Sousa Award®. Note: If you are presenting this award at your school, you must give the official student award to the winner (s).
2020-21. The Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award® was introduced in 1994 in honor of the legendary bandmaster and impresario. Patrick Gilmore (1829-1892) and his band joined General Burnside’s expedition to North Carolina in the Civil War.

Coliseums were erected for the occasions, holding 60- and 120,000 persons. Grateful Bostonians presented Gilmore with medals and cash, but in 1873 he moved to New York City, as bandmaster of the 22nd Regiment. Gilmore took this band on acclaimed tours of Europe.
