John Singleton Copley unexpectedly illuminated America’s colonial sky. The child of poor uncultured parents and only briefly the stepson of artist Peter Pelham, he became by 1760, as if by Providence, the colonies’ supreme artist, a position he retained until his departure for London in 1774.
The entire collection includes over 50,000 photographs of Milwaukee dating from the late 19th century to present day. The current digital collection is only a small fraction of the total available photos, but is growing all the time, so stop back to see what new images become available.
This collection consists of thousands of photos from Milwaukee’s history, ranging in date from the late 19th century through the latter part of the 20th century. Because of the large numbers of photos, the collection has been divided up into subject headings with sub-headings.
In 1781, after two years’ work, Copley installed his ten-foot-wide picture in a pavilion and charged admission to his popular one-work show. How Copley had persuaded fifty-five noblemen to sit for their portraits became the talk of British society.

Copley's earliest paintings, from the mid-1750s, reveal the influence of English mezzotint portraits as well as the work of local and itinerant artists. He experimented with many media: oil on canvas, miniatures on copper or ivory, pastel, and printmaking. By the late 1750s he was established as a portrait painter.
