Tanning dependence or tanorexia (a portmanteau of tanning and anorexia) is a syndrome where an individual appears to have a physical or psychological dependence on sunbathing or the use of ultraviolet (UV) tanning beds to darken the complexion of the skin.
I have lived and survived through "tanorexia" and I know it to be real. I think that the beauty trend of "having a tan glow" is pushing people towards unhealthy tanning practices that can lead to "tanorexia." Instead, we should be promoting healthy beauty standards of naturally fair skin and help save lives.
