Trump pledges to deport Haitians in Ohio city if elected
Reuters Videos8 hours agoSTORY: Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump pledged to conduct mass deportations of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio on Friday (September 13), even though the majority of them are in the United States legally. "I can say this, we will do large deportations from Springfield, Ohio." The city has been at the center of a social media maelstrom after right-wing agitators latched on to false claims that Haitian arrivals were eating household pets. The majority of the 15,000 Haitians in Springfield are there legally. Trump's longstanding pledge to conduct mass deportations usually refers to those in the country illegally. He did not repeat the assertion he made during Tuesday's presidential debate with Democrat Kamala Harris that immigrants were eating dogs and cats. Those remarks have been widely mocked. President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday addressed the issue directly. "A community that's under attack in our country right now. It's simply wrong. There's no place in America. This has to stop - what he's doing. It has to stop." Haitian community leaders across the U.S. have said Trump's remarks could put lives at risk and further inflame tensions in Springfield. Thousands of recent Haitian arrivals there have boosted the local economy but also strained the social safety net. City officials say they have received no credible reports of anybody eating household animals.

- 3:33Haitians in Ohio fear for safety after Trump's false claimsReuters VideosSTORY: Haitians living in Springfield, Ohio say they're on edge after Republican Vice President nominee JD Vance amplified false claims about immigrants there. The small city of 62,000 is in the national spotlight as Republican politicians, most prominently Trump at this week's presidential debate, ...spread baseless rumors that immigrants were eating the area's cats and dogs. City officials say there have been no reports of anybody eating pets. Springfield has seen some 15,000 immigrants from Haiti arrive in recent years. It has reshaped the city after a half-century of decline, offering some promise of economic revival along with growing pains. Wages have surged with rising number of job openings, though the city's schools and health clinics are under strain and rents have risen. What has not risen is crime, according to interviews with a dozen local, county and city officials as well as police data. The derogatory claims are weighing on Haitians in Springfield. This is Rose-Thamar Joseph, the secretary of the local Haitian Community Help & Support Center. "Since Monday after the tweet of the Senator Vance, the Haitian community in Springfield are a little bit all shocked and frustrated and a lot of them are maybe talking about leaving Springfield." Marc, who didn’t want to reveal himself on camera or share his last name, said he's been harassed at work. "I quit my job late last week because I was harassed, retaliate even like (they) tried to demote me because other guy employees would call me 'fucking Haitian', call me 'bitch' at work and I can't believe they do nothing. And I think it is not good, but I don't really feel I actually am welcome in Springfield." Tensions rose after a Haitian driving without an Ohio license struck a school bus in 2023, killing 11-year-old Aiden Clark and injuring 26 other children which Trump and Vance have also brought up this week. At a city council meeting on Tuesday, Clark's father Nathan Clark told the campaign to stop using his son's death for 'political gain.' “They can vomit all the hate they want about illegal immigrants, the border crisis and even untrue claims about fluffy pets being ravaged and eaten by community members. However, they are not allowed, nor have they ever been allowed to mention Aiden Clark from Springfield, Ohio. I will listen to them one more time to hear their apologies. To clear the air, my son, Aiden Clark, was not murdered. He was accidentally killed by an immigrant from Haiti. This tragedy is felt all over this community, the state and even the nation, but don't spin this towards hate." On Thursday, Springfield's government evacuated city hall following a bomb threat. Several police cars were stationed outside the hall, which otherwise showed no signs of disruption. Springfield Mayor Rob Rue told local media the threat came from someone who claimed to be a local resident and mentioned frustration with immigration. Hours later Trump continued his unfounded claims against Springfield's immigrants at a rally in Arizona, claiming they were, 'walking off with the town's geese.'2 days ago
- 2:19Trump: 'there will be no third debate' with HarrisReuters VideosSTORY: US Republican nominee Donald Trump said he would not take part in another debate with Kamala Harris before the November 5 election, with polls showing Harris had won Tuesday's ABC News Presidential Debate. He made that remark on his Truth Social site - and again at a campaign stop in Arizona: Trump: "So because we've done two debates and because they were successful, there will be no third debate." "As everyone saw two nights ago, we had a monumental victory over Comrade Kamala Harris in the presidential debate." Six Republican donors and three Trump advisers who spoke to Reuters disagreed. They said they believed Harris had won because the former president struggled to stay on message. Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent Trump ally, publicly told reporters it was a "missed opportunity." At a rally soon after Trump's post went live Harris said the candidates had a responsibility for a second face-off: Harris: "I believe we owe it to the voters to have another debate. Because this election and what is at stake could not be more important.” According to Nielsen data, an estimated 67 million people watched the debate. A majority of debate watchers said Harris outperformed Trump, according to a CNN flash poll released shortly afterward. And, among voters who said they had heard at least something about Tuesday's debate, 53% said Harris won, while 24% said Trump won, according to a Thursday Reuters/Ipsos poll. However the poll found voters continue to favor Trump over Harris on the economy. Clifford Young, Ipsos president of U.S. public affairs, says he thinks there may not be much of a 'debate bump' for Harris. Young: "What we're finding right now is a lot of stability, right? We find at the national level that Harris is in the lead relative to Trump. But on those key fundamentals issues like the economy and inflation, Trump ultimately has the lead. At this point, we're at a stasis moment where at the national level, she's in the lead. But things have not really changed all that much." The poll also found that 54% of registered voters thought one debate between Trump and Harris was enough, while 46% wanted a second.2 days ago
