After winning a scholarship to Allen University, an HBCU in Columbia, he was drafted into the Army. In 1966, stationed in Nuremburg, Germany, he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.2 seconds, a tenth-second off the record at the time.
Quick Striders Track Club originated in June 1967 under the leadership of Mr. Richard C. Kerns, President, and Mr. Samuel Kennedy, Vice-President. Quick Striders student-athlete participates in the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics all over the country every year.
Since the start of his coaching career in 1999, KB has produced 20 South Carolina State track and field champions in the 100, 110, and 400 meter hurdles. His athletes own three of the four South Carolina state track and field hurdle records – only the boys 400 meter hurdle title has been elusive.
