Hunter died of cancer at the Century City Hospital in Los Angeles on March 10, 1996. He was survived by his long-time partner, set designer Jaques Mapes, who was also Hunter’s production partner. Mapes died on May 4, 2002, aged 88. Hunter and Mapes are interred in adjacent crypts at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
