     I know for most erp systems there are separate tables for each of the following;

     Purchases (note a purchase is not necessarily a product)

     Product transactions (you will need this to calculate fifo stock values)

     Sales (usually but not always products)

     Product details (description etc)

     You mention expiry dates. These should be recorded against individual purchases ideally.

     Also note that purchases and sales are usually broken down into a header table and a details table (invoices and invoice lines).

     You're too worried about the relationships, and not worried enough about the tables.

     First, let's build a Shop table.

     Shop----Shop IDShop NumberShop NameShop Address...

     Generally, tables have a singular name and an auto-incrementing integer as the primary key. This is also called a blind key. That's why I have a Shop ID and a Shop Number. The Shop ID is the primary key and the Shop Number is data. The Shop Number can be changed without changing any of the relationships we're going to build.

     Now, let's build a Product table.

     Product-------Product IDProduct NameProduct Manufacturer ID...

     The Product ID is the primary key. The Product Manufacturer ID is a foreign key to a Product Manufacturer table. I'll leave the creation of the Product Manufacturer table as an exercise for you.

     Now, a shop can have many products, and a product can be carried in many shops. This is a many-to-many relationship. We model this relationship with a junction table.

     ShopProduct-----------Shop IDProduct IDProduct CostProduct PriceProduct Count...

     The primary key is (Shop ID, Product ID). You also have a unique index on (Product ID, Shop ID). The Product Price and Product Count values belong to the many-to-many relationship, not the Shop or the Product.

     You can get a list of the products for a shop through the primary key. You can also get a list of the shops for a product, and the total inventory as well as average price through the unique index.

     Now, we can talk about orders. You have the problem that an order can only go to one manufacturer. You also want to combine orders from the stores so you can order the correct quantities for all your stores.

     Let's build the Order table.

     Order-----Order IDProduct Manufacturer IDOrder Time StampOrder Delivery Date...

     The Order ID is the primary key. The Product Manufacturer ID is a foreign key.

     Next, let's build the OrderItem table. This is a standard name for the items in a order.

     OrderItem---------OrderItem IDOrder IDStore IDProduct ID...

     The OrderItem ID is the primary key. The Order ID is a foreign key. The Store ID is a foreign key. The Product ID is a foreign key.

     You get the manufacturer information from the Product Manufacturer ID in the Order table, using the Order ID.

     You get the order information from the Order ID

     You get the store information from the Store ID. This information is not necessary for the order. It is necessary to know where to deliver the products after the manufacturer ships the products.

     You get the product information from the Product ID.

     I hope this is enough of an explanation to get you started. First, you model the objects, like Store and Product. Then, you model the relationships between the objects, like ShopProduct.

     If you don't know the relation between them, Just create two separate table for plant and nutrient with ID and later you can create a sub-table which can relate one plant with many nutrients and vice versa using their ID or how ever you want.

     Option 1 is the only reasonable option

     As 1 Order has many Order Items, the orderId is held once in Orders and many times in Order Items.

     With Option 2, this relationship is possible but you would be duplicating data unnecessarily, as you wouldn't be able to have many OrderItemId values against one record in Order.

     This is basic normalisation.

     There are 3 known approaches to this:

     Single table

     In this model, you have a single table with all known columns, and allow them to be null for types that don't have that attribute. This gives you a simple database, and fairly simple SQL, but doesn't allow support for common features that relational databases give you, like insisting on non-null columns for a data type, or creating unique indices where that makes sense.

     It also tends to lead to messy SQL, with developers forgetting over time what columns mean, so you could get a column being used for multiple purposes.

     It does make it easy to join to other tables - so if you have an asset and a purchase related to that asset, the "purchase" table joins to the "asset" table on "assetID".

     Table per subtype

     In this case, you build a table for each subtype, and enforce the data characteristics of that subtype with not null, unique etc.

     This creates a clearer separation of subtypes, and is less likely to degrade into big ball of mud, but makes joins very hard - to join from "purchase" to "asset", you have to know which table holds that particular asset.

     Common table for common fields, table per subtype

     In this model, you have a single table for the fields that are common between subtypes - you say you've identified this already - and have further tables for each subtype to store the unique attributes.

     This solves the joining problem between "asset" and "purchase", keeps the data pretty self-describing.

     It does mean client logic needs to implement the "join asset_master to asset_subtype" issue.

     I prefer option 3 - it's the best trade-off between maintainability and managability.
