His first open-air cottage, “ Little Red ,” inspired the design of a number of institutions throughout the country that prescribed fresh air and sunlight as a cure for tuberculosis.

The UHC raised funds to build two branches of their National Jewish Hospital, one in New York, and a second, large sanatorium in Denver, Colorado. Those seeking treatment at the hospitals had to comply with strict requirements for admission, including multiple meetings with the admissions’ committee, with social workers, and with physicians.
In the late 1920s, with over 400 patients, the Iola Sanatorium was the largest county tuberculosis facility in New York State. A debate over the future use of the facility began in the Monroe County Board of Supervisors before the tuberculosis facility closed its doors in 1964.
