I think you're right about the last scene. He was little again, and blue in the moonlight. When Juan tells him he has to decide who to be, Juan says it right after telling Chiron about an old lady who told him that black men who run around at night soak up all the light, and are blue.
A real cathartic ending would be him meeting up with Kevin and realizing how unimportant Kevin is to him now. That he's just a ghost from his past, and he shouldn't allow what happened back then to affect who he is now.
I've always interpreted the ending as hopeful/positive, but she said it was the opposite for her, and she came out of the movie depressed. I thought it was implied that Chiron finally found someone he could be himself with, and that they would stay together.
