The square is named after the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. The total area is about 40,000 square metres. The Skanderbeg Monument dominates the square.

It is, as its name suggests, contained in an old communist bunker, but it is not, as the name might also suggest, an art gallery. It is a history museum charting the brutality of the communist regime under Hoxha and was both fascinating and horrifying in equal measure.
