Pvt. John J. Gray died in Chester, Pa., 8 June 1904. He served in Snow's Battery B 1st MD Light Artillery from 9 Nov. 1862 until at least 30 June 1864. He was a member of the North East Wingate GAR Post #9 after the Civil War.

The battery withdrew with Hunter into the West Virginia mountains and crossed with Hunter into the Ohio Valley, while General Early marched un-opposed into Maryland.
