In 1994 Rivera was honored at the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Stonewall Inn riots. Rivera died of cancer in 2002, and that same year the Sylvia Rivera Law Project was founded and named in her honor. It provides legal services to gay, transgender, and gender-fluid individuals.
