Never read the book but I’m a massive fan of Kubrick’s movie and I think Doctor Sleep was about as good a sequel to it as is possible in our current film landscape. I took issue with parts of the 3rd act, mainly the in-your-face references and replaying the same beats from The Shining.
Doctor Sleep is a dense dance of nostalgic supernatural horror mixed with a deep psychological examination of how we can rise from the sins of the past. Flanagan knows the audience is coming to see something scary, and there are parts that will make you jump, especially in the third act.
