The game's narrative follows the adventures of Alex Taylor who works with FBI Agent Zoe Winters and his crew to expose and apprehend corrupt FBI Special Agent Bill Coburn and his associate 5-10 V8 Dennis "Shiv" Jefferson. A major feature in The Crew is the large map in which a scaled-down version of the United States was created, allowing the player to explore the entire county coast to coast.

The game takes place in Oahu, Hawaii which makes it the first game in the series to be set away from mainland United States. Several new vehicle types within familiar disciplines were added to the game such as ATVs and utility vehicles.

The Crew Calling All Units is a DLC that released on November 29, 2016. The DLC saw the addition of new missions where the player could take on the role of Clara Washington to disrupt the operations of the Harvesters. Transporter was added as a new game mode.
