Trauma center levels across the United States are identified in two fashions – A designation process and a verification process. The different levels (ie. Level I, II, III, IV or V) refer to the kinds of resources available in a trauma center and the number of patients admitted yearly.
TRAUMA CENTER LEVELS DEFINED. Trauma centers can be verified/designated by the state or local government authority or verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Centers are designated and assigned a level based on guidelines specific to each state.

May 26, 2016 · There are five different levels of trauma centers in the United States, but they can vary from state to state, and not every state recognizes all five levels. Pennsylvania only recognizes Levels I through IV, for example. The American Trauma Society verifies the common criteria for each level.
Jul 17, 2023 · A Level I trauma center can provide the highest level of care for a patient presenting after a traumatic injury. A Level IV or V trauma center will stabilize an injured patient and arrange for transfer to a higher level of care.

Level IV and V trauma centers meet all the criteria of levels one through three. These centers also have emergency department facilities and staff with advanced trauma life support and laboratory services available 24 hours a day.
