Nov 6, 2023 · It’s a vital, spirited album that has real heart and passion, and is a treat from a genre that sometimes gets stereotyped (usually unfairly) as pretentious and emotionless. While Rio starts off deceptively simple with opening track “Big Mistakes”, it becomes quickly apparent that Rabin never intends to stay in any single sonic lane for very long.

Review by Ritchie Birnie for MPM. 30 years is a hell of a wait for a follow up with full vocals but fans of Joburg legend Rabin and YES are in for a treat that is well worth the wait. Opener “Big Mistakes” jumps back in time and takes you back to some proggy brilliance and a nod of the head to “Owner of a lonely Heart” Era Yes.
Rabin, Trevor: Rio. The first vocal led solo album from Trevor Rabin for just shy of three and a half decades, I must admit that I’ve sat on Rio for quite some time now, although, admittedly not the best part of 34 years. The reason being that with each subsequent revisit my estimation of this album creeps just a little higher.
