Sep 5, 2023 · Tests measuring free T4 – either a free T4 (FT4) or free T4 index (FTI) – more accurately reflect how the thyroid gland is functioning when checked with a TSH. The finding of an elevated TSH and low FT4 or FTI indicates primary hypothyroidism due to disease in the thyroid gland.
The goal of this study was to evaluate different TSH cutoffs leading to reflex Free T 4 testing, with the purpose to determine whether a widened normal range could decrease the need for additional Free T 4 testing and not lead to missing cases of thyroid problems.
