  5. Sep 24, 2014 · Black Destroyer” is the tale of a deadly carnivorous cat-like alien, the coeurl, who stalks the crew of an exploration spaceship. Van Vogt’s first published short story, it made the cover of the July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction (right; cover art by Graves Gladney).

  6. Mr. Van Vogt was most famously known for his “Dorsai!” novels. “Black Destroyer” tells of an alien life form, “Coerl,” a vicious, sentient animal somewhat resembling a large cat, with tentacles coming out of its neck, each with seven fingers.
