  1. Oct 12, 2020 · Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is known for his wicked sense of humor, and one of the ways he showed that was by giving weird, but somehow apt, nicknames to other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters. These pet names functioned in varying ways – some of them are terms of endearment or playful jabs, while others are subtle insults.

    • Shellhead. Tada! This one has to be the most iconic Iron Man nickname ever and for many reasons. Iron Man was called Shellhead on numerous occasions, not just in the comics (like in Tales of Suspense #56) but also in the MCU, where Natasha Romanoff uses the ‘pet name’ for Tony.
    • Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist. Neither of the four ‘nicknames’ really stuck long-term, but come on – this scene is one of the most iconic Tony Stark scenes in the entire MCU.
    • The Da Vinci of Our Time. Iron Man was always a popular character for Marvel Comics, but Robert Downey Jr.’ s portrayal of Tony Stark in the comics simply took the character to a whole new level of awesomeness and popularity.
    • Iron Avenger. This one is quite similar to the first entry we have on the list, Armored Avenger but is also one of the most iconic and most frequent Iron Man nicknames ever.

    • Junior. Though Ultron only had one appearance throughout the MCU franchise, he was considered to be a ‘child’ in Tony Stark’s eyes.
    • Squidward. Despite Avengers: Infinity War being one of the most gut-wrenching films among the Avengers movies, Tony Stark wasn’t willing to back down without turning his arguments and battles over with comedic relief.
    • Reindeer Games. Stark continues to prove just how unfiltered he is when it comes to dropping down names, even at their first meeting!
    • Build-A-Bear. Considering that Rocket’s tragic backstory had yet to surface in the MCU until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Stark calling the Raccoon as ‘Build-A-Bear’ in their first meeting in Avengers: Endgame was pretty spot-on.

    • “Lebowski” for Thor. Tony Stark had a few nicknames for Thor, with the best-known one being “Point Break,” but the funniest one (and the last one before his death) was “Lebowski.”
    • “Flash Gordon” for Peter Quill. It’s been interesting to see how Peter Quill clashes with the Avengers in the past couple of movies. When he meets Thor, he tries to impersonate his deep voice and regal English accent.
    • “Squidward” for Ebony Maw. The Tony Stark storyline in Infinity War was one of the most exciting, as it paired him up with an intellectual match and an ideological opposite in Stephen Strange and deepened his father-son relationship with Peter Parker (and they were later joined by the Guardians of the Galaxy).
    • “Rock of Ages” for Loki. Rock of Ages is a hit Broadway musical that takes jabs at the hair metal culture of the ‘80s, so the cast members all have long, flowing, ridiculous hairstyles.
