Each complete ISO 3166-2 code can then be used to uniquely identify a country subdivision in a global context. As of 23 November 2023 there are 5,046 codes defined in ISO 3166-2. For some countries, codes are defined for more than one level of subdivisions.
ISO 3166-2 establishes a code that represents the names of the principal administrative divisions, or similar areas, of the countries and entities included in ISO 3166-1. ISO 3166-3 establishes a code that represents non-current country names, i.e. the country names deleted from ISO 3166 since its first publication in 1974.
