As of the 2020 Census, the county had a population of 657,974, [2] making it the fourth most populous county in Michigan, and the largest outside of the Detroit area. Its county seat is Grand Rapids. [3] . The county was set off in 1831, and organized in 1836. [1] .

Michigan Counties. In 1796, the acting governor of the territory officially set the boundaries for Wayne County, which, at that time, included all of what later became the state of Michigan and parts of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. By 1830, Michigan had 12 organized counties. By 1852, most of the Lower Peninsula counties were established.
