Black Butler (Japanese: 黒執事, Hepburn: Kuroshitsuji) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. It has been serialized in Square Enix 's shōnen manga magazine Monthly GFantasy since September 2006.
Kuroshitsuji follows the adventures of Earl Ciel Phantomhive as he, with his faithful demon servant Sebastian Michaelis, carries out missions under the banner of the Queen's Watchdog, all the while seeking revenge on those who destroyed his family and made him suffer — at the cost of his soul.
The name "Kuroshitsuji" means "black steward" in Japanese. The anime is based on a manga of the same name written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. The main character, Ciel Phantomhive, is inspired by a real historical character, the Count of Monte Cristo.
