  It sounds like it's a non-printable character, which can often appear very differently in different applications. (I ran into a problem with these in SQL queries once, where another colleague was using a different editor which copied/pasted things differently.) It's tough to say with certainty which character it is, but based on this table (or this one which separates out the non-printable characters) my best guess is Record Separator:

  If you can examine the character in an octal or hexadecimal editor you can confirm this. You'd just have to identify the byte to examine (probably by copying that small piece into another file to examine).
  If this is the case, then chances are you can probably just delete that character in any editor which can see it. I can't think of a reason why you'd need it in the text, particularly in a browser UI.

  This is described in HTML5 CR, in the section on the script
  
  element. In the example case, since neither the defer nor the async attribute is used, the browser will fetch (with a GET request) and execute the script before continuing the processing of the HTML document. The default handling is thus synchronous blocking behavior.
  However, if you really use markup like <script src="http://...example.js"/> without an end tag </script>, the script is not fetched at all, except in the rare case where you serve the HTML document with an XML content type. The reason is that <script src="http://...example.js"/> is parsed as a start tag only, so all the rest is parsed as content of a script element, and when no end tag is parsed, the script element is not completed. So don’t try to use “self-closing” syntax; instead, write <script src="http://...example.js"></script>.

  The above is the simple, short answer.
  Standard practice tends to be, for most JavaScript, to place the script tag at the bottom of the body or to 'defer' it in the head. This is so that the loading of JavaScript does not slow the page itself from loading. To do either of these, see the following:
  <head>   <script src="filename.js" type="text/javascript" defer></script></head><body>   <script src="filename.js" type="text/javascript"></script></body>

  A straightforward method would be to use PHP to concatenate 3 includes:
  Step 1) In your .htaccess file, enable your server to parse .html & .htm files as .php files:
  AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .htmAddHandler application/x-httpd-php .html .htm-
  
  Step 2) In page.html, write (only) the following:
  <?php-include '/home/example/public_html/header.html';include '/home/example/public_html/body.html';include '/home/example/public_html/footer.html';?>
  
  N.B. /home/example/public_html/ is an example relative-to-root server path. You'll need to change this to whatever your own relative-to-root server path is.
  Now, when you point your browser at page.html, your server will parse that .html file as a .php file and concatenate and deliver three separate PHP server-side include files as a single .html file.

  Pretty minimal if any. It's HTML so you're not executing anything on the server. If it's absolutely, positively only viewed by the uploader then there's no XSS or CSRF attack vectors of any value.
  Your biggest risk is probably in the upload function and ensuring there's no malicious payload that could execute on the server side.
