This is the haunted forest. Maybe there are ghosts here, the spirits of the First Men. This was their place, once. The Wildlings. As I mentioned before, the wildlings appear to be trapped inbetween the Night's Watch and the Others, as enemy and/or ally to both.
It is less woody but the haunted forest doesn't go on forever. Depending on where they live they eat different stuff. In the forest they hunt and fish I imagine. We know there are at least elk, bear, and wolves. Some others live where they mostly catch and eat clams and fish. They have whale bone, so they must eat that.
The free folk are a race of people who live beyond the Wall in northern Westeros. They are more commonly referred to as "wildlings" everywhere south of the Wall. The brothers led one of the seven free folk invasions of the North. They were stealthy in their methods, passing beneath the Wall without being spotted.
