Showdown is a competitive battle simulator so your going to see a lot of people playing to win using the pokemon that are best within a tier. I recommend randomized formats like random battles and playing with friends for other options.

I think they're working on one. The Hisuian versions of Pokemon, as well as new Hisuian mons are now on Showdown, but they don't function yet, and aren't allowed in any format. Unsure if they're just there for when we get them in a mainline game, or if they're making a new format.
