Vattezhuthu Script was the script used for Malayalam from 9th century onwards, the modern script of Malayalam Language evolved from the ‘Grandha Script’ which came into existence by the 16th century.
Thus vaṭṭeḷuttu which was once prevalent in the Tamil speaking area became the script of Malayalam speaking region. Simalta vaṭṭeḷuttu kōleḷuttu and Grandha-lipi (Araya-elattu) were used for writing Malayalam language.
